Vegan Outdoor Products at VAUDE

Outdoor gear without leather, wool, or down? It's possible.

More and more people are making a conscious effort to avoid materials of animal origin in their clothing and gear. That’s why at VAUDE, we label products in which we specifically use only synthetic and/or plant-based materials.

And we already have quite a few of those: In our current Fall/Winter 2026 collection, 82 percent of our clothing, backpacks, bags, and shoes are classified as vegan.

What does “vegan” mean at VAUDE?

When we label a product as vegan, we deliberately avoid using any animal-derived materials or components.

This means, for example: no leather, no wool, and no down. Components of animal origin, such as horn buttons or beeswax, are also not used in these products.

Instead, we use synthetic and plant-based materials—such as recycled synthetic fibers, organic cotton, or hemp. The materials we use depend on the specific properties required for each product.

Transparency is important to us in this regard: For certain textile auxiliaries, such as dyes or adhesives, we cannot currently completely rule out traces of animal-derived ingredients. We do not always have complete transparency regarding all components of these intermediate products.

Why do we still use wool, down, or leather?

VAUDE is not an exclusively vegan brand. Our product line still includes items that use materials such as wool, down, or leather.

What matters most to us are the intended use of each product, the properties of the material, and the standards we set for its sourcing and processing.

Above all, we want to be transparent about the materials used in our products. This way, you can decide for yourself which product best suits your needs and personal preferences.

For our products labeled as vegan, one thing is clear: we consciously avoid using materials of animal origin.

Plant-based or synthetic—the right choice for the application

A rain jacket has to do something different than a T-shirt, a backpack, or a shoe. The materials we use for them are correspondingly different.

Depending on the design, synthetic fibers are suitable, for example, for products that require moisture-wicking, quick-drying, or durability. Where it makes technical sense, we also use recycled materials.

In addition, we use plant-based fibers such as certified organic cotton or hemp. These, in turn, offer different material properties, such as a comfortable feel.

We therefore always choose the materials we use based on the specific product and its intended use.

Vegan and Green Shape®—what's the difference?

At VAUDE, the “vegan” label describes a specific characteristic of the product: the deliberate exclusion of materials of animal origin.

Green Shape® is a comprehensive environmental standard for textiles that addresses various requirements for materials and manufacturing throughout the entire product life cycle. A large portion of our products labeled as “vegan” also meet the strict criteria of the Green Shape® standard.

The two labels therefore represent different aspects of a product.

How can you tell which VAUDE products are vegan?

We clearly label our vegan products in the product information. This way, you can immediately see which items are made without any animal-derived materials. Here's what that looks like on the product pages:

Our goal is to provide you with as clear a basis as possible for your purchasing decision.
