What makes VAUDE ski touring backpacks special?

Our VAUDE ski touring backpacks differ from our hiking backpacks in many ways: For example, they are made of particularly robust material, fit comfortably on the body and offer a number of features that are particularly important for winter tours. These include a compartment for shovel and probe as well as attachment options for skis, snowboard, ice axe and helmet.

Where do I put the avalanche equipment (shovel, probe) in my ski touring backpack?

As soon as you leave the piste, you are in alpine terrain. Accordingly, you should not only be familiar with avalanche awareness, but also know how to use a shovel and probe - and of course have the avalanche equipment with you in your ski touring backpack.

VAUDE ski touring backpacks have special safety compartments in which shovel and probe are safely stowed.

How do I attach my skis to the ski touring backpack?

On some VAUDE ski touring backpacks you can attach your skis sideways, on other models diagonally.

How to attach your skis to the side of the ski touring backpack

You can attach the skis parallel to each other on both sides of the ski touring backpack. Make sure that the base points towards the backpack. The part of the binding for the heel rests on the lower strap. Tighten this and do the same with the compression straps at the top.

Ideally, you should tie the skis together at the tips with a fastening loop, also known as a ski strap. This way, the skis are more stable and you won't get caught on the skis with every step.

How does diagonal fastening of the skis to the ski touring backpack work?

You attach your skis diagonally if the ski touring backpack has two straps that can be pulled across the backpack and hooked into loops. The straps are stowed in pockets on delivery.

With the diagonal attachment, the ski stoppers are interlocked. As with the side attachment, the heel of the binding rests on the lower strap. Snowboards can also be attached to the rucksack in this way.

Where to put the ice axe and helmet in the ski touring backpack?

You can easily transport your ice axe on the outside of VAUDE ski touring backpacks. Some models have a pocket for the axe. With these backpacks, you can stow the pick in this pocket. Otherwise, on all models, secure the handle with the upper strap and insert the plastic holder through the opening in the ice axe.

To save space in the ski touring backpack, all VAUDE models are equipped with a helmet holder. You still have access to the main compartment. Important: The helmet holder is located in a special compartment so that it doesn't get in the way on the descent.

Goggle compartment and hydration systems: the other features of ski touring backpacks

All of our ski touring backpacks are also compatible with hydration systems. Some models also have a goggle compartment to keep your sunglasses or ski goggles safely lined.

How big should my ski touring backpack be?

The size you should choose for your ski touring backpack depends on your tours. For piste tours, 18 liters is sufficient.

If you are going on day tours in alpine terrain, you will need more space for clothing, provisions and avalanche equipment. Models up to 30 liters are suitable here.

For high-altitude ski tours and multi-day tours, you need considerably more space, for example for rope, sleeping bag and "locksmith's shop". For such undertakings, ski touring backpacks with a capacity of up to 45 liters are the best choice.
