EMPCO Guidelines and Product Information

Environmental and Social Claims on VAUDE Products

More transparency for you—why our labeling is changing.

Environmental and social claims on VAUDE products may reflect older labeling. You can find current and more detailed information in accordance with EU requirements (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition: EmpCo) here.

What does this mean for products you buy or already own?

VAUDE is updating its environmental communication in accordance with the new EU guidelines (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition: EmpCo). Products manufactured before the Winter 2026 collection may contain environmental and social claims that require further explanation under the new requirements. The necessary evidence has always been available—what’s new is the legal requirement for independent certification and specifications directly on the product. Products from the Winter 2026 collection onward comply with these requirements.

What’s Changing and Why We’re Providing This Page

The EU Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (EmpCo) requires that, effective September 27, 2026, environmental and social claims must be specific, verifiable, and independently verified.

General terms such as “sustainable,” “environmentally friendly,” “climate-neutral,” or “fair” are no longer permitted without verifiable evidence—in both brick-and-mortar and online retail.

Instead of physically relabeling older products—which would result in a waste of materials—we are providing supplementary, clarifying information here. This approach is in line with the official recommendation of the European Commission (FAQ on the EmpCo Directive, Question 18).

Past Statements—and What They Mean Today

Strikethrough text indicates the original product statements. Instead, you'll see the current, EmpCo-compliant version—or why a statement has been omitted without replacement.

Fair Wear

The Fair Wear Foundation is a multi-stakeholder initiative that supports VAUDE in implementing human rights due diligence in its supply chains. Membership facilitates the identification, mitigation, and remediation of human rights risks and negative impacts, promotes access to grievance and remedy mechanisms for workers, and enables the tracking and transparent communication of progress. Membership is not a product or factory certification and does not guarantee that a supply chain is free of human rights risks or negative impacts.

VAUDE has been working with Fair Wear since 2010. For more information, visit: www.fairwear.org/brands/vaude

In the past:

Our products are manufactured in a fair working environment in accordance with Fair Wear standards.

GOTS - Sustainable, Certified Organic Cotton

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Why doesn’t VAUDE relabel existing inventory?

Because the products have already been lawfully placed on the market, the underlying sustainability performance remains unchanged, and retrofitting them would consume significant additional resources—including the potential destruction of labeling materials that have already been produced. This would contradict the goal of sustainable business practices.

Are the claims on older products still verifiable?

Yes. The evidence supporting the underlying environmental performance can still be provided. On this page (vaude.com/empco), we transparently explain what each claim specifically means and which standards underpin it. See the table above.

Since when has Vaude been Empco-compliant?

Product and marketing communications will be aligned with the requirements of the EmpCo guideline in time for the launch of the 2026 winter collection. In addition, numerous statements and icons have already been updated accordingly.

What’s changing with Green Shape?

Green Shape has been the environmental standard for VAUDE products since 2010. In early 2025, the independent organization Green Shape e.V. was founded, and the rights to Green Shape were transferred to it. Green Shape has been registered as an EU guarantee mark and is set to be accredited as an independent environmental standard.

The sustainability credentials of VAUDE products shipped prior to the W26 season remain unchanged.

More information.

Why can you find more detailed information here about environmental and sustainability claims?

The European Union has introduced new requirements to ensure that environmental and sustainability claims are clearer, more understandable, and more transparent. These requirements are based on the EmpCo Directive (EU) 2024/825. Additional guidance on its application is provided by the European Commission and the European Network of Consumer Protection Authorities (CPC).
