How do I lubricate a sluggish zipper?

Zips often become harder to open or close. Most of the time, lubricating the zip helps it run smoothly again. We’ll show you how you can lubricate a zip on a jacket, but it works just as well on other zips such as on a tent, suitcase or backpack.

Items Needed:

Silicone spray (for tents, rucksacks and luggage) or wax (clothing)

Difficulty: Easy

Time Needed: 5 minutes

Using lubricant correctly - here's how

Apply a little silicone spray or wax sparingly to both recesses on the zipper slider (guide rail of the teeth). Then slide the slider back and forth several times to distribute the product evenly.

Important: Silicone spray should be applied carefully - do not spray on too generously, as it can stain certain materials. To prevent the spray from penetrating the inside of the product (e.g. on membranes), it is advisable to place a piece of fabric or cardboard behind the zipper before use.
