You may be wondering why VAUDE products are manufactured not only in Germany and Europe, but also in Asia—especially given that working conditions in the textile industry there are often the subject of critical debate.
A look at the industry’s development helps put this into perspective:
Since the 1980s, a large portion of textile production has been shifted to Asia. In Europe—and also in Germany—there is now only limited production capacity for large-scale clothing manufacturing.
Why Production Isn’t Just a Matter of Location

VAUDE works with production partners in various countries and is committed to long-term collaborations. The producers we work with can rely on us because we provide them with genuine planning security. Our goal is to ensure transparency regarding working conditions and to work together to improve production processes.
Improving Working Conditions in the Supply Chain
Working conditions in global supply chains are a complex issue. Our approach is to systematically assess and review these conditions and work with our partner companies to improve them. In doing so, we take into account not only direct production facilities but also other stages of the supply chain.
Our collaboration is based on defined requirements that include, among other things, working hours, compensation, workplace safety, and the treatment of employees.
Role of External Audits
VAUDE has been a member of Fair Wear (FW) since 2010, an independent multi-stakeholder initiative that specializes in auditing working conditions in the textile industry. As part of this membership, production facilities are regularly audited, improvement measures are documented, and progress is evaluated.
Since 2015, VAUDE has been regularly rated in the highest possible category, “Leader,” in Fair Wear’s Brand Performance Check. This rating demonstrates that we implement and continuously refine processes and measures in line with the organization’s requirements.
According to Fair Wear’s own guidelines, the “Leader” category is intended for member companies that deliver exceptionally good performance and operate at an advanced level. Leader companies set standards, particularly in challenging areas such as living wages and freedom of association.
