What is bikepacking?

Bikepacking is a minimalist form of cycle touring. The kit is attached directly to the bike, usually using frame bags, saddle bags or handlebar bags. This keeps the setup light and stable, making it easy to tackle unpaved paths or long rides.
Many bikepacking routes deliberately steer clear of major roads. Narrow gravel tracks, quiet forest paths or hidden mountain passes become new routes to discover. The bike becomes the ideal companion for multi-day adventures as well as spontaneous weekend getaways.

Which bikes are suitable for bikepacking?

For bikepacking, you need bikes that are stable, versatile and comfortable.

Suitable bike types

  • Gravel bikes – fast on tarmac and gravel

  • Mountain bikes – perfect for more challenging trails

  • Touring bikes – comfortable for long distances

The key is that the panniers can be securely attached to the frame and that the bike performs reliably, even on long rides. Because when everything is properly set up, we can focus fully on the essence of bikepacking: being on the move and enjoying nature.

Which equipment do you need for bikepacking?

In bikepacking, every gram counts. Your gear needs to be lightweight, robust and as versatile as possible.
As well as panniers, tents, sleeping bags and other compact outdoor gear also play an important role if you’re setting off for several days or want to spend the night off the grid.

Typical bikepacking gear

  • Frame bag for tools and heavy items

  • Saddle bag for clothing or sleeping gear

  • Handlebar bag for the tent or sleeping bag

  • Lightweight bikepacking tent for overnight stays

  • Compact sleeping bag suitable for different temperatures

  • Spare parts and tools

It is particularly important to have suitable  bikepacking bags , that stay securely in place on the bike and allows you to carry your luggage safely. Many cyclists use a bikepacking packlist, to carefully plan their kit and take only what is really necessary. Because the lighter the luggage, the more carefree the ride feels.

How many kilometres do you cover per day when bikepacking?

The distance we cover when bikepacking depends heavily on the terrain and the route.

Typical daily distances

60 to 120 kilometres per day.

But bikepacking is rarely about setting records. What matters far more is the experience along the way: discovering landscapes, taking a break by a lake or admiring the sunset at the end of the day’s ride.

Difference between bikepacking and traditional cycle touring

Bikepacking differs from traditional cycle touring in several ways.
Bikepacking: light luggage, usually without a luggage rack, often off-road, gravel bike or mountain bike
Traditional cycle touring: larger panniers, luggage rack and panniers, usually on roads or cycle paths, touring bike
Thanks to its lighter kit, bikepacking is particularly suited to flexible routes and spontaneous trips.

Planning a bikepacking trip: how to get started

For your first bikepacking trip, it’s worth doing a bit of planning.

Tips for beginners

  • Don’t plan overly long daily distances

  • Plan for water and food supply points

  • Choose lightweight, functional kit

  • Check the route in advance using maps or apps

Many beginners start with a weekend trip to get used to their kit. Sometimes, just one night under the stars is enough to experience the special atmosphere of a bikepacking tour.

Bikepacking is about experiencing nature mindfully

Bikepacking is a unique way to travel. We traverse the countryside under our own steam, experience the weather, terrain and nature more intensely, and discover places that are difficult to reach by other means of transport.
With sustainable gear and a respectful attitude towards nature, we can help ensure that these experiences remain possible in the future.
Because bikepacking isn’t just about being on the move. It’s also about arriving in the heart of nature – and seeing it with fresh eyes.
