Buying the right tent

Anyone looking for the right tent for a holiday should think about a few things before buying one.

  • Tent size: how big should the tent be? It’s not enough to know whether it should be a small, ultra-light, one-person tent for a cycling holiday or rather a large family tent. You should also consider whether and how much luggage needs to be stored in the tent and how much free space you need for sleeping: a cosy couple's holiday or two large people lying on separate sleeping mats?
  • Packing size and weight: is it enough if the camping tent fits in the boot of the family car? Or does every centimetre count when it comes to packing size, because the tent will be stowed in a backpack every day when trekking? When it comes to bikepacking, trekking or expeditions, every gramme counts.
  • Weather: if the tent is only used for summer holidays in the south of France, you’ll need a different tent than you would for trekking in Iceland or northern Norway. How warm, cold or wet will it be? Will there be any mosquitoes? Rain and snow are no problem with the right tent.
  • Tent usage: how often do you go camping? Is it just the kids camping in the garden in summer, or is it three times a year climbing and camping in warm weather? The requirements will vary depending on whether you use the tent regularly or only rarely.

The VAUDE tent guide asks for all this information to make the decision for the right tent easier. Simply click through it and you will be shown the right tents for you!

It’s incredibly important to take proper care of your tent! Dirt, resin from trees and the weather take their toll on the materials. Here are some practical tips on how to care for and clean your tent.
