Sustainability has always been VAUDE's top priority. In our efforts to ensure resource-saving production, we often break new ground – for example with S. Café® recycled polyester, a functional material made from recycled coffee grounds. Using recycled coffee grounds we can turn organic coffee waste into functional clothing. The S. Café® material is odor-inhibiting, quick-drying and offers natural UV protection, offering full functionality while also making a contribution to reducing waste.

Hot drinks with outdoor potential

Coffee in functional apparel – sounds a little strange at first. But the fact is, used coffee grounds have several benefits that are tailor made for functional outdoor clothing. Did you know, for example, that coffee not only absorbs unpleasant odors, but also transports moisture away more quickly? Thanks to this property, the S. Café® material dries much faster than fabrics such as cotton..

Used coffee grounds also provide natural UV protection. We are taking advantage of this protective effect in the production process to offer you UV-resistant functional apparel made of sustainably produced materials. Recycled coffee grounds pays off in two ways: on the one hand, we can eliminate the use of chemical odor inhibitors and other additives; on the other hand, we are supporting local coffee suppliers in reducing their landfill waste.

Coffee grounds recycling: how it works

To recycle coffee, we use a patented process to mix recycled polyester granulate with used coffee grounds. First we dry the coffee mass, de-oil it and grind the dried coffee grounds into a fine powder. Then we process it into granules and add it to the melted polyester granulate, which produces the raw resource for our special S.Café® fabric.

We use S. Café® high-tech fiber for the production of T-shirts, jackets and other functional clothing. The coffee particles are firmly encapsulated in the material and do not wash out. This creates long term odor and UV resistance for your outdoor clothing.

VAUDE offers a wide range of functional apparel made from S. Café® material. The high-tech fiber is primarily used to make T-shirts, jackets and fleece products. VAUDE also offers bike shorts with performance chamois made of S. Café® material.
