Skarvan Trekking Backpacks: Heavy duty backpacks for wilderness trekking

The call of the wild

The Scottish Highlands, the Kerry Way in Ireland or the expansive Fjäll region of Scandinavia provide plenty of space for solitude and long-distance wilderness tours. You can hike here for days without seeing a cabin or other trace of civilization along the way, so you’ll have to take everything you’ll need with you and, of course, a pack that can hold it all – such as the Skarvan backpack from VAUDE.

"Fairly large, clever design and exceptionally robust." is how the wilderness traveler Gabriel Gersch describes VAUDE’s new trekking backpack. "You still have to haul your gear yourself, but in terms of carrying comfort and robustness, I was totally satisfied," said Gersch, who was instrumental in the development.

The backpacks of the new Skarvan Series are designed for challenging trekking tours that involved carrying all your gear and food with you over long distances and rough terrain. The four models (one especially for women) in various sizes up to 90 liters are robust and reliable workhorses with plenty of storage space that are comfortable with loads over 25 kg as well. And thanks to environmentally friendly choice of materials, they have even earned the VAUDE Green Shape label.

The adjustable Tergolight Comfort suspension can be individually adjusted; two internal frames create excellent load distribution and stability. The newly developed, ergonomic Ergo Shape shoulder straps provide superior freedom of movement in the shoulder area, which is particularly beneficial when hiking with trekking poles. The well-padded hip belt has been redesigned for an even better load transfer and is essential for comfort and a secure fit. This pack for heavy loads is made of very tough, highly water-repellent material (600 D and 1200 D ripstop polyester). "With the Skarvan, robustness and reliability were very important to us and the focus of the development process. To avoid potential problems, we refrained from using zips in high stress areas. Instead, access to the bottom compartment and main compartment is through roll closures that are impervious to abrasion and exceptionally waterproof,” said product developer Florian Schmid.

Expand the carrying capacity of the main compartment by 10-20 liters thanks to the extra material in the roll closure (lengthen the stuffer). All of the items you’ll need with you on the trail for the day fit in the spacious, height adjustable lid. The lid is preformed to provide clearance for excellent freedom of movement; in addition you can transform the lid into a small backpack for a scramble up the peak or while you’re exploring around camp.

Well packed and close at hand

A large hip belt pocket with waterproof zips stores items you’ll need to have at hand while hiking. A specially designed holder stores your drink bottle securely while trekking or tent poles fit into the large side mesh pockets. Everything that can’t be stowed in the compartments can be attached outside on the daisy chain with a carabineer or strap. The Skarvan backpack can be packed down small with three side compression straps; rain cover with storm straps is included.
