VAUDE Recycled Materials

Turning old into new

As a group of people who love to be outdoors, of course we want to help protect our planet. This is why we decided to increase the use of recycled materials in our manufacturing processes. Because sometimes, it’s just those materials ending up in landfills that are exactly what we need to make our high quality gear. In the process, we adhere to the strict guidelines of the Global Recycling Network. VAUDE products with a high minimum content of recycled material earn the Green Shape label – such as shoes with at least 30 % or apparel with at least 90 %. Take the Men’s Carbisdale Jacket with PFC-free Eco Finish. This warm and cozy winter jacket made with eco-friendly manufacturing is not only breathable, it’s also waterproof and windproof – ideal for longer tours in icy regions. In order to keep on improving our environmental protection efforts, we intend to increase our use of recycled materials in the future. This applies to jackets, T-shirts, bags and much more with the Green Shape logo.

From fish catcher to eye catcher

The recycled materials for our production facilities are obtained from a wide variety of sources. Some of our products are made from abandoned fishing nets. There are multitudes of these floating around in our oceans, posing a considerable threat to all kinds of marine life. The environmental conservation organization WWF considers plastic to be one of the biggest problems facing marine habitats today.

Fishing nets are primarily made from polyamide – one of the most important raw materials for a wide range of VAUDE’s functional outdoor gear. What could be better than solving a host of problems with one elegant solution? By purchasing gear made from eco-friendly production, you can help to conserve energy, oil and emissions while also contributing to a reduction in the size of our landfills.

PES and PET

Recycled polyamide is by no means the only raw material that we’re breathing new life into. For many products we use material remnants from the production of polyester. These remnants often end up in the non-recyclable waste bin at other producers. Not at VAUDE. Together with recovered PET bottles which are first cleaned, granulated and melted, our suppliers spin a fine polyester yarn. In addition, we also use sCafé® recycled polyester. Instead of trying to read the future from used coffee grounds – we’re using them to create a new future. Several functional properties can be created by adding coffee grounds to polyester fabrics – making them ideal for outdoor gear. They dry faster while maintaining equivalent levels of UV protection and gain antibacterial properties that makes them almost odorless. In conventional textiles, these features can only be accomplished with additional chemical treatments. From the polyester yarn we create new functional products for our customers, such as the PETair backpack and the Kids Igmu Jacket Boys. These and other stylish examples are the best proof for us that polyester recycling (PES recycling) is worth it and recycled materials are a way to improve environmental friendliness and resource conservation.
