Down clothing is very popular, and not only in outdoor circles, because it offers outstanding thermal performance at a very low weight and small pack size. However, the origin of down remains a sensitive issue. Animal welfare and sustainability issues are not always top priorities, and the scandals surrounding foie gras production and live plucking have made consumers more aware of this. In the outdoor industry, standards such as RDS have now established themselves, yet VAUDE, as a proven eco-pioneer, is taking this even a step further.
VAUDE is heralding in a new era for all its down jackets. These jackets now contain recycled down, serving to inspire as well as demonstrate sustainable textile and recycling management.
GRS-certified recycled down
The garments are filled with between 75 and 80 percent recycled down from GRS-certified sources – the remaining portions of primary down and supporting feathers are required to stabilize the fill power. GRS (= Global Recycling Standard) is an internationally recognized standard that monitors the supply chain. Most of the down comes from processed bedding and down clothing. In an elaborate process, the used down is washed, sterilized, sorted in an air chamber stream, and then remixed to the desired fill blend and quality.
Kabru Series with recycled down and more
VAUDE will also only use recycled down in the highly technical Mountain line in the future. The Kabru Hooded Jacket, Kabru Light Jacket and Kabru Light Vest have been specially designed for mountain sports enthusiasts and alpinists whose focus is on sustainability as well as small pack size and optimum performance. The down trio is light as a feather, yet keeps you warm and cozy, and can be packed down small. The Light Jacket weighs in at almost 100 grams less than the Hooded Jacket, and the Kabru Light Vest can be quickly pulled out of a backpack if you need extra warmth on tour.
All three models are equipped with a high-quality, GRS-certified, 80/20 down feather blend (700 cuin), and a super-light, yet stable Pertex® Quantum outer shell made of recycled polyamide. The side torso sections and sleeve cuffs are made of moisture-resistant PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation Eco – which is also made from 100 % recycled PET bottles.
The outer material and lining of the Kabru Hooded Jacket, Light Jacket and Light Vest are all made of recycled polyamide, reducing waste and conserving resources. The only component that VAUDE hasn’t yet been able to find a recycled solution for is the zip.
Fashion and function in the planet’s best interest
The VAUDE Women’s Annecy 3in1 Coat III and Men’s Annecy Parka are the ideal winter companions for city and country getaways. Whether freezing temps, icy winds or steady rains – the duo defies any weather with style. Rainproof outer shells made of environmentally friendly recycled polyester are soft to the touch, while removable inner jackets with high-quality GRS or RDS certified down fill are sure to keep you warm. The fashionable stitching also lends them their own distinctive style when worn on their own.
Depending on the weather and season, the outer and inner jackets can also be worn separately. A garment made to wear from autumn to spring. Adjustable hood and sleeve cuffs block out wind and rain, while the reflective prints on the left sleeve help keep you visible in low-light conditions.
Environmentally friendly manufacturing
Recycled materials are only part of VAUDE's comprehensive Green Shape product philosophy. All products are also made with eco-friendly, water repellent Eco Finish and are manufactured without the use of fluorocarbons (PFC). The VAUDE Green Shape label stands for environmentally-friendly, functional products made from sustainable materials.
